A brief history of the Girard Credit Union
Who can
belong
In 1960, a group of forward-thinking educators--Donald Borger, Herbert Cramer, Jr., Betty McMahon, Alice Mitchell, Anthony Palermo, Clara Payak, Rose Santagata, Frances Swegan, Sam Vuletich, and Dr. Kenneth Wallace--requested permission from the state of Ohio to form the Girard Credit Union, Inc. Other Girard names that you may recognize are Kenneth Altier, O.C. Baumgartner, George Light, and Edward Matkovich. Each has played an important part in shaping who we are today.
Since 1960, membership has been open only to employees of the Girard City School District and their immediate families. We petitioned the superintendent of credit unions for the state of Ohio to move our office and increase our field of membership and were approved! We are here to serve you!
We now have over 300 members, 2 million dollars in assets and $350,000 in capital.
To join, please stop by our office to complete a membership card. A small $10 deposit opens your account. Membership is now open to anyone who lives, works, worships or attends school in Girard or Liberty township.

Pete Gabriel- Vice President
Pete received his Bachelor's Degree in Secondary Education from Slippery Rock University and his Master's Degree in Secondary Administration from Youngstown State University. He taught social studies for two years at Hubbard High School and then for 34 years in Girard high School. Pete coached a variety of sports including football, boys and girls basketball, volleyball, and softball. He has been married to Julia for 52 years and has 2 sons and 4 grandchildren. He has been on the board of this credit union since 2006.
Kristy Fill- Treasurer
Kristy has a Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics with minors in Computer Science and Accounting from Youngstown State University. She also has a Master's Degree in Education from Ashland University. She recently retired from Girard City Schools where she had been a math teacher at the high school for 31 years. She is a lector and a member of the choir at St. Christine Church. She appeared on the tv show Homework Express for 8 years. She has been married to Len for 46 years and has 3 grown children and 2 granddaughters. She was assistant treasurer for four years prior to accepting this position.
Roberta Lawrentz- Secretary
Roberta has a Bachelor's Degree in Education with a major in Mathematics and a minor in Computer Science from Youngstown State University where she is a lifetime alumni member. She was a math teacher at Girard High School for 15 years and was a part time advisor for the robotics team. Being semi - retired, she enjoys sewing for her clients and gardening in her spare time. She served as president of the Girard Historical Society for 10 years and is now a trustee. She has been active in Girard Junior Women for many years. Roberta has been a member of this board since 2003
Joyce Bowser - Board Member
Joyce graduated from Youngstown State with a degree in English Education. She received her Master's Degree in English in 1991. She was an English teacher at Girard High School, for 27 years, retiring in 2000. She was married for 30 years to the late Larry Bowser. Joyce is currently a part time English instructor at YSU. She is raising her grandson, Nathan. She is a faithful member of the First Christian Assembly church in Liberty and has been a member of this board on two different occasions--From June 1998-April 2001 and from July 2016 to the present.
Glenn Holmes Board Member
Glenn has a Bachelor's degree in sociology from Mount Union and is a graduate of Girard High School. He began his career with the FBI. Afterward, he became a service supervisor with Dowell Oil and Gas Division and a lengthy career with First Energy as a substation inspector.
He previously served as council president and mayor of McDonald, Ohio. He was then elected State Representative serving Ohio's 63rd House District. During his career, Glenn has chaired numerous public, civic and private boards. Glenn has been married to Carol for 41 years and has 3 children and 7 grandchildren.

team!
Denise Deltondo- President
Denise has her Bachelor's Degree and Master's Degree in Business Education from Youngstown State University. She was a business teacher for 30 years at Girard High School. Since her retirement in 2004, she has kept busy being a lector and 2nd grade religious education teacher at St. Rose. She is also a member of the Trumbull Retired Teachers Association where she is a past president. With them, she has coordinated the spelling bee since 2007. She was also a trustee of the Ohio Retired Teachers Association of Trumbull County. Denise has been on the board of this credit union since 1991 and has served as its president since 2004.
Susan has a Bachelor’s degree in English from Hiram College, along with teaching certificates in both high school English and mathematics. She has a Master’s Degree in English Education from Youngstown State University. Susan is now retired after teaching for 34 years, with the majority being spent teaching mathematics and English at Girard High School. She also served as the yearbook advisor at Girard High School for 11 years. Susan has been married to Scott for 21 years. She has been serving on the Girard Credit Union Board of Directors since April 2022.
In Memoriam
Tom Archer - Board Member
Tom served in the U.S. Army with the 3/7th Calvary in Germany as band sergeant and piper in the Gary Owens Pipes and Drums before obtaining his B.S. in Education from The University of Akron majoring in Physical Education and Health. He received his Master's Degree in Education from Westminster College. He taught phys ed, health and science at Girard Junior High School for 36 years before retiring in 2009. During that period, he was also principal of Tod Woods Elementary for 3 years. During college he was a member of The Bedrock Music Company which performed at college events. He was married to the late Jeanne Fagerstrom for 41 years and has 3 children and 6 grandchildren. He is currently married to Linda, a retired school teacher. Tom is a deacon at Evangel Baptist Church where he and his wife serve on the Care Team. Sadly, Tom passed away in December 2021.
